BRITTANY BRODSKY ON WHY SHE LOGS HER WORKOUT

WHY I LOG MY WORKOUTS

WHY DO I LOG MY WORKOUTS

FIRST OFF, MERRIAM WEBSTER DEFINES ACCOUNTABILITY AS THE THE QUALITY OR STATE OF BEING ACCOUNTABLE; ESPECIALLY : AN OBLIGATION OR WILLINGNESS TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY OR TO ACCOUNT FOR ONE’S ACTIONS.  TO ME, ACCOUNTABILITY IS THE PROCESS OF KEEPING MY SH*T TOGETHER AND STAYING FOCUSED ON MY GOAL. MOTIVATION IS FICKLE, IT COMES AND GOES BASED ON WHAT WE FACE IN OUR DAY TO DAY GRYNDE. I HAVE FOUND THE EASIEST WAY TO HOLD MYSELF ACCOUNTABLE IS BY WRITING DOWN MY WORKOUT BEFORE ATTEMPTING. IF IT GOES IN MY BOOK, I HAVE TO COMPLETE IT, OR GIVE IT MY BEST D*MN SHOT AT GETTING IT DONE. MY WORKOUT LOG IS MY FAVORITE TOOL FOR MAINTAINING ACCOUNTABILITY.

GOAL SETTING:

NOTEWORTHY, AN UNMEASURABLE GOAL HAS NO MEANING. IT IS EASY TO SAY I WANT TO SQUAT 400 LBS. IN MY OPINION THAT STATEMENT IS A WISH NOT A GOAL. A GOAL HAS THE BELOW COMPONENTS AND COMES WITH EXPIRATION DATES. ON JANUARY 1ST EVERY YEAR I SIT DOWN AND WRITE DOWN MY SHORT TERM, MID TERM AND YEAR END GOALS. I POST THESE GOALS ON THE FIRST PAGE OF MY WORKOUT JOURNAL, WHERE I WILL SEE THEM EVERY MORNING. THIS ALLOWS ME TO REFOCUS EVERY SINGLE DAY AND MAKE SURE MY ACTIONS ARE ON TRACK WITH WHERE I WANT TO ULTIMATELY BE.

  • Specific (simple, sensible, significant).
  • Measurable (meaningful, motivating).
  • Achievable (agreed, attainable).
  • Relevant (reasonable, realistic and resourced, results-based).
  • Time bound (time-based, time limited, time/cost limited, timely, time-sensitive).

POST WORKOUT LOGGING

UPON COMPLETION OF MY WORKOUT, I MAKE SURE TO LOG MY WEIGHT SELECTION, MY TIME AND ANY MODIFICATIONS TO THE RX WORKOUT. IF MY GAME PLAN GOES WRONG AND I HAVE TO MODIFY I MAKE SURE TO NOTATE THE ORIGINAL INTENTION OF THE WORKOUT AND WHAT AND WHY I HAD TO MODIFY.

REFLECTION

ITS NOT ALWAYS RAINBOWS AND BUTTERFLIES. SOME DAYS OF TRAINING ABSOLUTELY SUCK A**. THOSE ARE THE DAYS THAT I TAKE AWAY SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST A SWEAT SESSION. FAILURES KEEP ME HUMBLE, AMPLIFY MY WEAKNESSES AND PINPOINTS WHAT I NEED TO DO IN AND OUT OF THE GYM. ALL OF MY HIGHS AND LOWS OF MY FITNESS CAREER ARE FOUND IN MY JOURNAL. MY LOG HIGHLIGHTS MY PERSONAL RECORDS AND IDENTIFIES SKILLS THAT NEEDS POLISHING. I ALWAYS HAVE RECORD OF WHERE I STARTED, WHERE IM GOING, AND MOTIVATION TO KEEP GOING.

CONCLUSION

IN CONCLUSION, THE MORE I LOG IN MY WORKOUT JOURNAL, THE EASIER IT IS TO STAY FOCUSED. BY VISUALLY SEEING MY GOALS ON PAPER, THE MOTIVATION COMES NATURALLY.  THE NEXT TIME YOU STOP AT THE STORE, PICK UP A COMPOSITION JOURNAL OF SOME SORT THAT YOU CAN KEEP WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES. YOU THEN WILL BE ABLE TO LOG YOUR SESSIONS AND PROGRESSIVELY MOVE FORWARD WITH YOUR GOALS.

ABOVE ALL, MAY THE GAINS BE WITH YOU – COACH BRITTANY
